Brain Solutions was formed by Helen and Mike Downey. They originally trained as Veterinary surgeons in South Africa but after the birth of their second son in 1969, Aidan who was born with Rubenstein Tabyi Syndrome which is a rare Genetic Disease. This condition, much like Angelman syndrome, has many intellectual, physical and physiological problems associated to it. As Helen and Mike searched for answers to their sons problems, they were drawn first to the United Kingdom then to the United States, here they were given a multisensory stimulation programme of therapy which they carried out daily. within a few months Aidan's understanding and co-ordination had improved dramatically. This impressed them so much they sold up and moved to Philadelphia where they studied Neurodevelopmental rehabilitation. In 1972 they returned to the United Kingdom and together with a colleague they created the St Briavels Centre for Child Development.During their time at the centre they saw some 1500 Children with a wide range of disabilities from over 30 countries, in 2003 they left the centre to allow them to develop areas of particular interest to them. Thus Brain Solution was formed. The philosophy of Brain Solutions is the belief that all the needs of the particular child need to be addressed, not just to focus on his or her main disability. It was found that a childs health, physical abilities and intellectual abilities are often intricately linked. An assesment of the child is first carried out then an individual programme of therapy is taught which needs to be carried out daily. the child is reassessed regulary and adjustments are made to the programme of therapy as the child progresses. Melissa's journey with Brain SolutionsMelissa is particularly lucky as she has her programme written in School for her by the person who carries out her therapy. Mr Friend is the only person in a School enviroment who carries out Brain Solutions. At first we were a little sceptical about the idea as we had never heard of Brain Solutions before but we thought it couldn't do any harm so lets give it a go.The initial assessment was in January 2007 when Melissa was 4 years old.
